The City of Kalamazoo is launching a reusable takeout container program to reduce plastic waste, PFAS chemicals, and microplastics. The program partners with businesses to provide reusable containers, and the city is covering start-up costs and for up to 15 local establishments.
The containers, called Forever Ware, aim to reduce single-use packaging and eventually contribute to the elimination of single-use plastics. Forever Ware has worked with very large brands, and is making a push to partner with smaller businesses across the United States.
The containers are checked out of businesses, similar to checking out a book from the library. If you order takeout at an establishment using the Forever Ware, a $5 refundable deposit is made on the first purchase. When customers finish their food, the container is either returned in a self-return Forever Ware kiosk – similar to a bottle return – or exchanged at the restaurant for a clean, new container the next time they order food.
