Meeting Brief: November 18, 2024 Kalamazoo City Commission

During the Committee of the Whole Meeting on November 18, 2024, the Kalamazoo City commission reviewed traffic safety updates with Public Works Division Manager, Dennis Randolph. The meeting highlighted significant achievements in reducing crashes within the city through various traffic calming measures and engineering solutions. Randolph presented data showing a reduction in crash rates and improvements in pedestrian and bicycle safety. Commissioners engaged with Randolph on the challenges faced during construction projects and the impact on traffic flow, as well as the importance of community communication. The meeting concluded with discussions on future safety enhancements and the role of engineering in improving city infrastructure.

In the Regular Business meeting the Commission reviewed adjustments to water utility rates and the impact of inflation on infrastructure projects. Director of Public Services, James Baker presents, an overview of upcoming water and wastewater projects, emphasizing the city’s proactive stance on lead and PFAS management. Public comments highlighted concerns about housing, homelessness, and the need for community support. The Commission also acknowledged the retirement of Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain and celebrated local achievements in community service and cultural events.
