Sweeping Statement

The beautiful brooms of artist Morgan Pell

Public Media Network’s Frank Jamison Fellowship looks for talented storytellers, journalists, and filmmakers for a competitive program designed to strengthen their professional skills. The Frank Jamison Fellowship cohort that ended in December, 2024, included writer Sarah Horton, who came to PMN looking to round out her experience as a new journalist.

Sarah worked with Lem Montero, PMN’s content director, to create a video showcasing artist Morgan Pell’s unique style of handmade brooms and whisks. Sarah interviewed Morgan on camera and later edited the video to create a fun and moving piece about the artist.

Thanks to the nature of the Frank Jamison Fellowship, however, PMN was able to provide Sarah an additional opportunity by collaborating with Encore Magazine for a written feature about Morgan for their April 2025 issue!

“If we can provide a richer experience for someone, we’ll do it,” said Lem Montero. “We’d like people to leave the Frank Jamison Fellowship stronger than they came in. In Sarah’s case, we were able to coordinate with Encore Magazine, giving her an additional chance to hone her talent.”

Read Sarah’s piece on Morgan, Sweeping Beauty on Encore Magazine’s website or look for it in their printed piece available for free at various locations throughout Kalamazoo.
