Women’s Equality Day

More than 100 people came out to support the League of Women Voters of Kalamazoo’s recognition of Women’s Equality Day on Monday, August 26, in downtown Kalamazoo. They were met with supportive honks and cheers as they held signs promoting women’s rights, the ratification of the ERA, the need for child care, and more.

“We feel that this year, much of what we’ve had is being rolled back,” said Aedin Clements, co-president for the League of Women Voters of Kalamazoo. “There are many services that everybody needs, but that affect women in particular. Services connected with health, public welfare, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and democracy itself.”

One of the important services provided by the League of Women Voters of Kalamazoo is creating a voters’ guide that gives candidates for local offices an opportunity to describe who they are and what they stand for. The guide, scheduled to begin distribution both in print and online in early October, offers voters a non-partisan view of everyone that participated ahead of November’s election where commissioners and area mayors will be selected.
