Civic Snapshot: June 16, 2025 Kalamazoo City Commission

The Kalamazoo City Commission reviewed presentations from three executive search firms: SGR, CPS HR, and Ralph Anderson & Associates. The purpose is to select a firm to conduct a national search for a new city manager. Each firm presents their approach, highlighting community engagement strategies and commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Commissioners ask questions to clarify the firms’ methods, timelines, and success metrics. Public comments emphasize the importance of community involvement in the selection process. The Commission plans to further discuss the decision after gathering community feedback. In the regular meeting the Commission addressed significant water infrastructure projects, including lead service line replacements and PFAS treatment, to improve the city’s water quality and capacity. Public Services Director, James Baker presented. Public comments highlighted concerns about housing, public safety, and immigrant rights. The Commission approved several contracts related to these infrastructure projects and discussed the importance of trust and community involvement in city governance. Additionally, the meeting covers topics such as the DDA tax levy and the purchase of property for local development.
