Civic Snapshot: August 28, 2025 Comstock Township Planning Commission

The Joint Planning Commission and Moratorium Committee Meeting discussed the proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Comstock schools. Dr. Jeff Tais, Superintendent of Comstock Public Schools, presented concerns about the proximity of the BESS to the schools, citing a study that recommends a safe distance of at least one mile. The meeting debated setbacks and sensitive areas, considering the impact on schools, daycares, and nursing homes. The committee aims to balance safety with development interests, planning for further discussions and public hearings. The Planning Commission approved a special land use permit for the construction of a greenhouse on East Main Street. The commission also recommended the rezoning of a property from residential to industrial use to the Township Board. Additionally, a new proposal for a Seven Brew Coffee drive-through on Gull Road was discussed, and both the special use permit and the site plan were approved. The meeting included public hearings for each item, with minimal public input. The commission expressed interest in revisiting landscaping ordinances in the future.
