Meeting Brief: July 11, 2024 City of Kalamazoo Zoning Board of Appeals

The Board approved a request from American Village Development LLC. at 5135 Portage road for a dimensional variance to allow 83% impervious cover for a redevelopment project where 80% is the maximum allowed impervious cover for the CC district. This overage increase will help to cap contaminated soil and prevent further spreading of contamination. The project will host a new Marriott hotel. The developer is requesting the increase to build a new 4-story hotel on a site with existing soil contamination.

The city staff supports the request due to the environmental benefits of limiting vulnerable surfaces on the contaminated site.
